THE LANDING

FRIDAY, OCT. 31–SATURDAY, NOV. 22, CHAPEL HILL

DEEP DISH THEATER—Age 86 can be an awkward time to break in a new writing partner. But songsmith John Kander (Chicago and Cabaret) debuted his first musical without longtime partner Fred Ebb in New York last fall: a triptych of one-acts that tilt into different realms of the uncanny. A carpenter and a bullied young math whiz, an exasperated nephew and his loopy aunt, and an aging gay couple who've just adopted a child explore, according to critic Jesse Green, "how adults implicate children in their fantasies and failures." Paul Frellick directs John Allore, Mark Ridenour, Erin Tito and Neil Bullard; Glenn Mehrbach leads the band. 7:30 p.m. Weds.–Thurs.; 8 p.m. Fri.–Sat.; 2 p.m. Sun., $14–$25, 201 S. Estes Dr., 919-968-1515, www.deepdishtheater.org. —Byron Woods
