The Kruger Brothers

When: Fri., March 27, 8 p.m. 2015

Though Jens and Uwe Kruger are from Switzerland, and their bassist Joel Landsberg is from New York, the Kruger Brothers have emerged as a North Carolina treasure during the last decade-plus. On banjo and guitar, respectively, Jens and Uwe are incredible bluegrass pickers, fleet enough for dazzling traditional runs that seem played in fast-forward. They’ve collaborated with some of the genre’s biggest names, too, often appearing with the late Doc Watson. But they’ve made great efforts to push bluegrass into new planes, especially through a series of classical pieces that combine the roots sounds they embrace with classical quartet and concerto structures. Their world premiere of Lucid Dreamer, a concerto and collaboration with the Kontras Quartet, last year at IBMA in Raleigh was a standing-ovation marvel and a perfect exercise in hybridization. This rather rare club appearance should be a treat. —Grayson Haver Currin
