Adrian Johns will also discuss the transition in the seventeenth century between natural philosophy and experimental philosophy, with a focus on the works of Newton, Hooke, Descartes, and others. He will examine efforts to automate discovery by having computers “read”’ millions of scientific papers in order to find patterns, gaps, and laws.
