10. EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE (1999)

Watch this movie a dozen times and try to convince yourself that it's not terrible.

Pros: Darth Maul, Liam Neeson

Cons: Jar-Jar Binks, midichlorians, Jake Lloyd, podracing, racial stereotypes, battle droids

Memorable line: Nothing comes to mind.

Box office gross: (adjusted for inflation, rounded): $860 million

9. THE CLONE WARS (ANIMATED, 2008)

The TV series of the same name improved as it aged, but its kickoff movie was forgettable and generally derided by critics as one of the worst flicks of 2008, right up there with the made-for-TV Ewok movie and the infamous holiday special.

Pros: The TV series ended up being good!

Cons: Everything else

Memorable line: "The desert is merciless. It takes everything from you."

Box office gross: N/A

8. EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES (2002)

An awkward love story about a sullen teenager with a rat tail and an older ex-queen.

Pros: Yoda's mad lightsaber skills, less Jar-Jar

Cons: Obi-Wan in a space diner, Hayden Christensen

Memorable line: "I don't like sand."

Box office gross: $477 million

7. EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH (2005)

"Best of the prequels" is a dubious honor, but here we are.

Pros: The lightsaber battle on Mustafar, Samuel L. Jackson

Cons: Padme literally died of a broken heart, "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!"

Memorable quote: "So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause."

Box office gross: $530 million

6. EPISODE VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS (2015)

Fun, to be sure, but I liked it better when it was called A New Hope.

Pros: Harrison Ford punching the clock one more time, Daisy Ridley being awesome

Cons: Starkiller Base makes zero sense, don't even try

Memorable quote: "Chewie, we're home."

Box office gross: $965 million

5. EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983)

Our heroes get a happy, if predictable, ending.

Pros: Palpatine in the flesh, Luke vs. the rancor

Cons: Ewoks

Memorable quote: "It's a trap."

Box office gross: $840 million

4. EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI (2017)

The opposite of The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson's subversive take on the franchise works better the more you think about it.

Pros: Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, Laura Freaking Dern, the scene with Snoke, that ending

Cons: That weird Finn subplot, the last of Carrie Fisher

Memorable quote: "Amazing. Every word of what you just said is wrong."

Box office gross: $220 million on opening weekend

3. EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE (1977)

In just 125 minutes, George Lucas introduced us to a whole new universe.

Pros: Alec Guinness, the Mos Eisley Cantina, Luke and Han vs. the TIE fighters

Cons: All of the dumb changes George Lucas retconned into later versions

Memorable quote: "That's no moon."

Box office gross: $1.59 billion

2. ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY (2016)

The first Star Wars movie to not star a Skywalker—or even a Jedi—shows the Rebellion at its scrappy best.

Pros: That scene with Vader

Cons: The weird CGI of Grand Moff Tarkin

Memorable quote: "I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me."

Box office gross: $540 million

1. EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980)

It's universally acclaimed as the best of the saga for a reason.

Pros: The big Vader reveal, the battle on Hoth

Cons: How long was Luke training with Yoda, anyway? And how long did it take the Millenium Falcon to make it to Bespin without a working hyperdrive?

Memorable quote: "I know."

Box office gross: $877 million
