The Independent Weekly 20th Anniversary

Looking back

Here's what The Indy was writing about the week of Aug. 20:

5 years ago: Karen Mann reflected on the drug-related death of Stacy Guess, a trumpeter most known for his work with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, as part of a special issue looking at drugs and local music.

10 years ago: Barry Yeoman ventured into the heart of tobacco country with the group Friends of Tobacco, which was traveling the state in a PR push against the anti-smoking agenda.

20 years ago: Jason De Parle observed the labor strife between the Hanes Company in Winston-Salem and its workers, many of whom suffered from "repetitive motion traumas" resulting from continuous labor. The workers claimed that the clothing manufacturer was covering up widespread hand, wrist and arm injuries.
