The Imitation Game

Rated PG-13 114 min. 2014

Benedict Cumberbatch has a knack for playing genius types. His portrayal of mathematician Alan Turing, however, is more troubled than snarky Sherlock. This owes to Turing being not only socially challenged, but a gay man during an era when British law prohibited homosexuality. The year is 1939, and Turing is working for the British government to crack the Nazi code of naval communication. With the help of his colleagues, particularly Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley), he builds a machine to solve the German code. Hiding his sexuality proves to be a harder task. Cumberbatch throws himself into the role with fervent affliction.
