This season's pedigreed art-house crowd pleaser—think Slumdog Millionaire or The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel—The Hundred-Foot Journey tells the story of a wandering Indian family who open a restaurant in a small French village. Unfortunately, their new digs are just across the street from a famous classical restaurant run by the imperious Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Cultures, as you might expect, clash. Director Lasse Hallström (Chocolat) serves up gorgeous imagery of food and countryside, two parallel love stories, plenty of gentle humor and a dash of tragedy to get things moving. Everything is pitched at the tonal level of a fairy tale, and that's how it's best enjoyed. The film's storybook vibe makes it easy to forgive all the blunt sentiment and aggressive sweetness.
