The Good Lie

Rated PG-13 110 min. 2014

The film may have Oscar aspirations for itself and Reese Witherspoon, but a muddled tone undercuts this true story of four young survivors of Sudanese civil war. Witherspoon plays an employment agency rep who finds jobs for newly arrived refugees and becomes invested in the lives of the ones this tale centers on. By never settling on strong points of view for the main characters, director Phillipe Falardeau and screenwriter Margaret Nagle fail to sufficiently tell the tale of these "Lost Boys of Sudan." There is a great film to be made from this story, but this isn't it.
