The Ghost Writer

When: Fri., July 22, 9 p.m. 2011

Two radically different critical hits from 2010 play at the museum's summer film series this weekend. On Friday, it's Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer, a paranoid thriller about an author (Ewan McGregor) whose efforts to write the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan) uncover quite a few things he wishes he hadn't found out. On the polar opposite end of the spectrum is Saturday's screening of Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon, a surprisingly exciting and well-conceived all-ages adventure about a young Viking who befriends a downed dragon and finds himself going against his village's long tradition of killing the fire-breathing beasties. Though it's not Pixar-worthy, the film wisely downplays the slapstick and corny one-liners of most CGI kids' films in favor of emotional stakes and cleverly designed creatures. Both films begin at 9 p.m. Admission is $4, or free for museum members. —Zack Smith
