The Dodos, Springtime Carnivore, Eric + Erica

When: Mon., Feb. 23, 9 p.m. 2015

Little imagination is required to realize how differently things might have gone for San Francisco’s The Dodos, a drum-and-guitar duo whose shout-out-loud hooks, huge drums and heavy strums seemed unstoppable at the band’s peak. Six or so years ago, each cut from Visiter and then Time to Die was a hit waiting in the wings, a feeling confirmed by their simple but irrepressible live set. They seemed bound for spring-night amphitheaters. But in recent years, as many of their peers have pushed from indie rock’s flanks toward the mainstream, The Dodos have sat largely still in style, substance and reception. Their later records have played like less enthusiastic renditions of their early ones, a problem crystallized by the unmemorable new Individ. Live, at least, they’re still engrossing, with a spartan setup that pounds out a massive sound. —Grayson Haver Currin
