This low-budget religious thriller models itself after the Paranormal Activity
franchise, using the tedious found-footage conceit to illustrate the dangers of non-Vatican-approved exorcism. The plot concerns a young woman, Isabella, who travels to Italy to investigate her mother's botched exorcism. She soon becomes involved with a group of priests performing illegal exorcisms. The journey is recorded by Isabella's exploitative documentarian friend. Somewhere in the expanding pupils and twisting contortions of possessed human bodies there's an interesting idea about the intersection of psychiatric illness and demonic possession, and that of faith and science, but ultimately the film plays like a horrific mash-up of Tales from the Crypt
and Jersey Shore
. Avoid the hype and save your screams for a more worthy film.
