The Damned United

When: Fri., June 18, 9 p.m. 2010

This final installment of the Indy's Kicks and Flicks series of films, co-sponsored with the Carolina RailHawks and Eurosport, is a film that struggled to find an audience last December but deserves a shot under the stars at NCMA. Screenwriter Peter Morgan adapts David Peace's novelized account of legendary enigmatic English soccer manager Brian Clough (played by Michael Sheen) and his 44-day, ill-fated stint as head of reigning champion Leeds United in 1974. Director Tom Hooper consciously features less than five minutes of re-created game play throughout the film. And, unlike the typical sports film that follows a story arc of adversity, perseverance and triumph, success turns into failure inThe Damned United. The film is not only a (platonic) love story between Clough and longtime assistant Peter Taylor (Timothy Spall) but moreover a character study of the corrosive effects of pride and obsession, embodied in Sheen's magnificent performance. Members of the Cary-based Carolina RailHawks professional soccer team will be in attendance. —Neil Morris
