A town's poisoned water supply quickly turns it from a quaint little village in which the town sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) can raise their unborn child into a reprise of the community that suffered through the Night of the Living Dead
. As the sheriff and his wife try to escape the infected—and the military team that is determined to quarantine them—they discover that the town "crazies" aren't exactly there because of a natural phenomenon. Director Breck Eisner (Sahara
) follows horror conventions quite predictably, yet he cleverly manages to deliver shocks by adding a few ingenious cinematography twists. What's more, the film raises a few chuckles as it mocks its own genre. The Crazies
is like a familiar carnival ride, but one that is far more enjoyable than most.
