The Connells, Sixteen Tons, Hannah Elsie Chapman

When: Fri., Dec. 20, 8:30 p.m. 2013

The Connells rose with the R.E.M.-inspired jangle-pop movement, though they were as influenced by Big Star's warm melodies as the Byrds' ringing Rickenbackers. They ruled college radio, but they faded when grunge rejected that version of melodicism. After their eighth album, 2001's Old School Dropouts, they went on hiatus. A few years ago, however, they rereleased their entire catalog, and periodic shows have evolved into the making of a new album. Between Mike Connell's slicing guitar and singer Doug MacMillan's crisp vocals, they've built a nice musical legacy. Perhaps it will be jump-started by the forthcoming album. —Chris Parker
