The Company You Keep

Rated R 125 min. 2013

Robert Redford directs the film of a Neil Gordon novel about aging Vietnam-era radicals who are living their remade lives decades later. Redford is "Jim Grant," a respectable lawyer whose cover is blown after one of his erstwhile compatriots (Susan Sarandon) turns herself in and a newspaper reporter (Shia LaBeouf) starts asking questions. A cross-country chase ensues, with Terrence Howard and Anna Kendrick playing the feds. The film is well-researched and well-meaning, but its earnest talkiness overwhelms the radicalism and the thrills. It needs a little of Alan Pakula or Sidney Lumet's sensibility.
