A stalwart cast of past-prime actors (Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones) star in this well-intended but ultimately vapid tale of corporate downsizing. Set in the office towers and McMansions that have replaced Philadelphia's once-mighty shipping industry, Affleck's young corporate hotshot goes through the stages of denial and shock and bargaining when he loses his cushy job, while Chris Cooper, in facing the same fate, discovers that there's no place for old men in this economy. Meanwhile, Tommy Lee Jones agonizes over the decline of America's manufacturing base even as he carries on an affair with his company's human resources hatchet woman (Maria Bello, most assuredly in her prime). At times the film plays like the corporate flip side of the second season of The Wire
, but there's no wit, suspense or fresh insight here.
