The Color Purple

When: May 25-30 2010

Once Oprah Winfrey gives her national approval to a book or musical, it's pretty much a straight shot up to the top. The Color Purple is no exception, with Winfrey's co-production an obvious blessing. Based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, the play follows "po' chil" Celie as she weathers pregnancy and marriage at a young age in 1930s rural Georgia. Winfrey acted in the 1985 film, and it's clear the role had an effect on her: Her production company, Harpo, bears the name of her character's husband, in addition to it being the backward spelling of her name. —Sarah Ewald
