The Christians

When: Sat., Feb. 10, 7:30 p.m. 2018

Though many religions make extravagant claims of purity, perfection, and the infinite, they are all embodied and enacted by fallible, finite people—people who don't always make the best case for their cause. Ultimately, we encounter a faith only through its followers, a circumstance that raises questions about the nature of both. PlayMakers Repertory Company is preparing to investigate the topic in two rotating repertory productions. David Ball studies the effects of sanctimony on the upper class in his adaptation of Molière's farce, Tartuffe. And Lucas Hnath questions just how monolithic modern-day Christianity is in his 2014 drama, The Christians, in which a megachurch fractures after its leader rejects a long-held tenet of faith and his congregation unexpectedly follows him. —Byron Woods
