The Cat and the Canary

When: Fri., March 8, 8 p.m. 2013

One of the original scary movies, the 1927 silent film The Cat and the Canary still resonates today with its important safety message: Don't go to spooky old mansions for the midnight reading of your uncle's last will and testament. Seriously—it never ends well. German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni set the template for later horror pictures with this shadowy classic, which delivers its thrills by way of meticulously assembled lighting, camera work and art design. Every frame is a composition. Saturday morning cartoon veterans will recognize some of the set pieces here: Bugs Bunny riffed on this stuff 30 years later when squaring off against dim-witted witches and vampires. —Glenn McDonald
