The Candy Snatchers

When: Wed., July 14, 8 p.m. 2010

Ah, Cinema Overdrive. You always have a way of making even the most hard-core moviegoer go, "What the hell?" Your latest number is 1973's The Candy Snatchers, where a trio kidnaps a rich girl (named Candy, get it?) and proceeds to spiral into poorly acted sex and violence. Said "Candy Snatchers" (the group's name, along with a shot of them in fake glasses, is repeated seven times in the film's two-minute trailer on YouTube) soon bond with their victim, and they discover that her stepfather is more than willing to let Candy die to get her inheritance. (By the way, if you're reminded in any way of the Patty Hearst saga, that kidnapping occurred in 1974.) As a mute autistic boy tracks them down, the kidnappers find themselves wondering "Was a piece of Candy worth a fortune in diamonds?" Featuring a stronger-than-expected story and plenty of dark comedy, The Candy Snatchers is a rare gem of exploitation you can catch on the big screen for a mere $5, plus plenty of retro trailers. —Zack Smith
