The Box

When: Fri., Nov. 15, 8 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 16, 8 p.m. 2013

New York performance artist, playwright and actor Alina Troyano has challenged that city's downtown scene since the 1980s with caricatured alter egos drawing on Cuban folklore from her youth, such as Carmelita Tropicana and Latin macho Pingalito Betancourt. As Tropicana, she brings a new meta-biographical work called The Box to the Process Series at UNC's Institute for the Arts and Humanities, which promises to be by turns subversive and fantastic. Using themes of family and race, she explores feelings of abandonment and inspiration out of her relationship with her revolutionary father, who fled Batista's regime with Castro's rebels. —Chris Vitiello
