Jennifer Lopez and Alex O’Loughlin play the sort of faux-folk only Hollywood could contrive. She’s Zoe, a hopelessly single Manhattan pet store owner who is undergoing fertility treatments because she wants to be a mother. He’s Stan, an organic cheese farmer (?!) looking for love. Let the tropes begin! On her way out of the sperm bank, Zoe and Stan meet-cute when they try to commandeer the same taxi, and after series of coincidental encounters, the two are rolling in the hay inside Stan’s cheese barn. The rest of this tedious Knocked-Up
knockoff revolves around the manufactured conflict of whether Stan intends to shirk some mysterious, incomprehensible responsibility and (horror!) break up with Zoe. Beyond the ethical idiocies, The Back-up Plan
is just a crass, crummy movie full of latent elitism, unpleasant sight gags and (ugh!) dog reaction shots.
