The American Beauty Project

When: Fri., Oct. 15, 8 p.m. 2010

Relationships with the Grateful Dead can range wide. On one end are those for whom the Dead represent a lifestyle choice; on the other are those for whom the band and its beyond-devoted followers are a punch line. While there might not be that many musicians who are card-carrying Deadheads (frequent recruit Bruce Hornsby springs to mind), the Dead has a healthy share of fans in the music world. On Deadicated, a 1991 tribute LP, Elvis Costello, Dwight Yoakam, Jane's Addiction and Lyle Lovett were among those singing Grateful Dead songs. Los Lobos, also on the Deadicated roster, recorded "West L.A. Fadeaway" on their latest release, while Levon Helm covered "Tennessee Jed" on last year's Electric Dirt. Helm's daughter Amy and her group Ollabelle are the latest to honor the Dead, courtesy of American Beauty Project, a guest-stocked revue that takes its name from the Grateful Dead's best album. Singing along with Ollabelle for the project are country/ bluegrass hero Jim Lauderdale, gifted vocalist Catherine Russell, Aoife O'Donovan of the band Crooked Still and frequent Dylan collaborator David Mansfield. —Rick Cornell

Price: $18-32, $5 for Duke students
