The Affectionates, The Toothe, The Charming Youngsters

When: Sat., Jan. 10, 9 p.m. 2015

Three North Carolina acts offer varying interpretations of what it means to make folk-rock. Durham’s The Affectionates counter aching, howling guitars with sweet harmonies and traipsing banjo lines, as though Sufjan Stevens suddenly became a Crazy Horse devotee. From Asheville, The Toothe slips playfully surreal lyrics into a controlled bedlam that’s suggestive of The Avett Brothers long before they rubbed beards with Rick Rubin. The best of the bill, though, might be The Charming Youngsters, Greenville émigrés now in Raleigh. Their tunes balance musical buoyancy and lyrical weight, cloaking worldly misgivings in eruptive choruses. —Grayson Haver Currin
