The Addams Family

When: Feb. 28-March 4 2012

I'll give the makers of this musical some credit: Rather than just adapting episodes of the classic sitcom or either of the feature films, they went back to the original Charles Addams cartoons that inspired the media franchise. Well, it does still have the classic Addams Family theme, but c'mon, how could it not? At least it wasn't the "Addams Groove" that MC Hammer did for the 1991 movie version, which my little brother would not stop singing. New York critics have not been kind to this show's Broadway run, which hasn't stopped it from being a top seller and spawning this touring version, once again proving that branding with an existing property and engendering morbid curiosity is a surefire gimmick in the mixture of art and business. Oh, that's just bitter. I should really save that bile for when the touring Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark comes through the area. It's an inevitability. Tickets to Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. opening show run $36–$66; performances continue through March 4. —Zack Smith

Price: $11-66
