Symphony X, Iced Earth, Warbringer

When: Mon., March 5, 7 p.m. 2012

If your heavy metal preference skews toward the heroic and epic rather than the villainous and nihilistic, tonight kind of offers the ultimate double feature. Though they've become relative stars in prog metal, New Jersey's Symphony X can sometimes sound a tad lifeless as they navigate the jagged edge between more straight-ahead fare and the neo-classical transcendentalism of their peers, the two poles pulling toward a place of general tedium. But like the long lineage of metal bros from its state, Florida's Iced Earth goes for it without equivocation, turning the appropriately named "Anthem" into a hands-up, fists-clenched sing-along. Love or dismiss them, Iced Earth are bombastic and plenty proud. Warbringer opens with revivalist thrash that peppers their obvious influences with a fitting flair for the dramatic. The show starts early at 7 p.m. (got to make room for all those solos, you know). —Grayson Currin
