Sword of the Groovy Movie Film Festival

When: Aug. 31-Sept. 2 2012

Male power fantasies are writ large in this red-blooded festival that will likely send moviegoers daring enough to view all its flicks in one sitting into a paroxysm of testosterone-induced bloodlust that can only be satisfied through carnage, carnal relations or an excess of alcohol. You have been warned. "Groovy" indeed are these flicks, which include Bruce Campbell laying the smack down through slapstick in Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness, Arnold Schwarzenegger teamed with the works of Robert E. Howard, the script of Oliver Stone and the direction of Red Dawn's John Milius in Conan the Barbarian, the cosmic ninja-star battles of Krull, John Boorman's take on the Arthurian legend in Excalibur and a rare showing of 1982's cult favorite The Sword and the Sorcerer, with Matt Houston's Lee Horsley as a mercenary who must beat a warlock to become king. The sequel to this last film, Tales of An Ancient Empire, just came out on DVD earlier this year. A $25 pass gets you into all these films, with $6 for individual shows; all are 35 mm except Excalibur, which is an HD projection. —Zack Smith
