Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street

When: July 17-21 2013

I was reading about the use of child actors in Elizabethan drama who were often abducted from the streets to star in the blood-soaked plays of John Webster, Christopher Marlowe and their contemporaries. This came to mind when I saw that Playmakers' summer youth repertory is producing Stephen Sondheim's cult classic Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which deals extensively with cannibalism, incestuous desire and bloody vengeance. It's somewhat less unsettling than the 7-year-old obsessed with such issues in Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl, thus marking the one time in human history anyone has made a reference to that film. At any rate, attend this tale of Sweeney Todd to show support to the playmakers of tomorrow, though be wary if they're selling any meat pies. God, that's good! —Zack Smith
