Superlove Highway (cd release), Transistor Zen, Ryan Johnson

When: Sat., Aug. 10, 9 p.m. 2013

The bright-eyed Raleigh quartet Superlove Highway were all set to release their debut EP last month at an open house for the revamped Southland Ballroom. But the day before the show, the band announced that guitarist Josh Pack had landed in the hospital for urgent surgery and they'd have to cancel. Pack has since recovered, and this rescheduled gig gets the record out only 20 days later. What's more, the scenario provides a fitting parallel to the music of Superlove Highway, which explores soul-heavy, blues-laced rock—the sort made by songwriters who've been battered and bruised but emerge with a glint of hope, shining in their songs like stage lights across the shiny body of their trusty dreadnought. If The Black Crowes' less sizzling numbers or Ryan Adams' less pugnacious offerings suit you, Superlove Highway might qualify among your new favorite locals. Transistor Zen and Ryan Johnson open. —Grayson Currin
