CHAPEL HILL
DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET
Memorial Hall—Mandolin virtuoso/composer/label-owner David Grisman is one of a handful of musicians who can make the claim of being a newgrass founder. But, unlike everybody else who took bluegrass on an adventurous left turn, Grisman's long roots were more in old-time music (courtesy of the Even Dozen Jug Band) than in old 'grass. Since then, he's collaborated with members of both camps and beyond—Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury, Sam Bush, Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck, David Bromberg, the Kronos Quartet and, of course, Jerry Garcia—bringing Dawg music to the masses. Tickets are $10-$60 for the 2 p.m. show. —Rick Cornell
