Aid for Aids: The Away Team, L in Japanese

Cat's Cradle--This isn't a show for sleepers: Some of the hardest working dudes in North Carolina hip hop come together for an AIDS fundraiser, bolstered by an impressive cast united by cause, not aesthetic. L in Japanese masks a winded, heavy flow of startling imagery and hard-hitting demands with a huge smile, while Jozeemo--who has returned full-force to the studio-and-stage grind after being released from federal prison in February--sports a sharp narrative tongue, a B. Sigel descendant times two. The Away Team is the party-dude hip hop to Kaze's serious soul-searching beat. The Urban Sophisticates are an "organic" live hip-hop band actually worth seeing. Tickets for the 8 p.m. all-star bash are $7.--Grayson Currin

The Beauty Academy of Kabul

Chelsea--Before there was Iraq, there was Afghanistan, a country that most people agreed could use a little regime change and reconstruction. In those heady days, the burka-wearing Afghan women became a source of worldwide concern, and The Beauty Academy of Kabul nimbly captures the inevitable culture clashes that occur when the Western fashion industry sponsors a beauty school complete with an Anna Wintour award to the top student. A year after taking a Full Frame bow, Liz Mermin's film plays locally. --David Fellerath
