Summer Exhibitions Opening Reception

When: Thu., July 6, 6-8 p.m. 2017

Triangulate CAM's three summer exhibits and you get some weird kind of national snapshot. Dorian Lynde's No Damsel consists of wall paintings of Disney princesses reimagined as contemporary women. Eric Yahnker's The Long Goodbye... takes a wistful look over the shoulder with forty-four pastel-on-sandpaper portraits of Barack Obama. And in Gun Show, David Hess welds, bolts, and jams together all manner of found objects to make thirty-eight mock assault rifles that you can pick up and pose with. CAM celebrates the set of exhibits with a reception at which all three artists will be in attendance. Though pricey, the event is a chance to put to the artists some of the challenging questions their shows raise: How does Hess feel about his critique of gun violence when he sees the glee some patrons take in hefting his rifles? Is Yahnker contemplating a series of Trump portraits in some similarly self-destructive medium? —Chris Vitiello
