Step It Up & Go

When: Sun., April 10, 3 p.m. 2011

Borrowing its name from the standard penned by Piedmont bluesman Blind Boy Fuller, Step It Up & Go documents the history of Carolina blues. The film features interviews and performances from several of the style's most celebrated musicians, including Joe and Odell Thompson, Etta Baker and James "Guitar Slim" Stephens. Those folks not only inspired the creation of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and the Music Maker Relief Foundation, but also received major awards for preserving the region's musical heritage. Originally broadcast on UNC-TV in 1997 and produced by folklorist and UNC associate professor Glenn Hinson, the film is presented here by PineCone. The free showing begins at 3 p.m. —Spencer Griffith
