Steep Canyon Rangers, Mipso

When: Fri., Nov. 15, 9 p.m. 2013

Steep Canyon Rangers began just more than a decade ago like so many other bluegrass or old-time acts have done—Southern college boys, picking in private and then in public, moonlighters out for a good time. But after their time as Tar Heels, they kept playing, headed west into the mountains and signed a record deal. After years of steady touring, the comedian Steve Martin pushed them into the spotlight when he asked the Rangers to serve as his backing band. They've since played the biggest auditoriums in the world, collaborated with Paul McCartney and recently served as the home state hosts for the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards in Raleigh. Not bad, right? Thanks to the addition of a middling drummer last year, their own music seems to be at a stylistic crossroads, stuck between stations of contemporary relevance and historic reverence. They've turned into emissaries, too, but it remains to be seen how far they can push traditional bluegrass without faltering. —Grayson Haver Currin
