Steely Dan, Elvis Costello & The Imposters

When: Thu., Aug. 6, 7 p.m. 2015

A terrific pairing. One of the finest songwriters of his generation, the 60-year old Elvis Costello plays a punchy hour-long set taken almost entirely from 1986 and before, backed by the Imposters (two-thirds of his ex-band the Attractions). His lyrical flair is fueled by double entendre and clever linguistic leaps. Producing an extraordinarily crisp blend of rock, blues, jazz and pop, Steely Dan was one of the finest studio bands of the ’70s. Though they were once notoriously averse to touring, that’s changed in the last decade. From the jazzy sway of “Babylon Sisters” to the jumping “Bodhisattva,” it’s a nearly two-hour set without soft spots and powerfully backed by horns and backup singers. —Chris Parker
