Steel Magnolias | Fletcher Opera Theater | Stage | Indy Week

Steel Magnolias

When: April 20-29 2012

I have never seen Steel Magnolias, the play or the movie. And that is because I know every damn plot point from it being referred to 100 times in other movies, TV, books, etc. as the quintessential chick flick. It doth stand above the likes of Beaches, Thelma and Louise, Waiting to Exhale and the rest as the most estrogentastic story ever told. Yes, I know Shelby has diabetes and shouldn't have tried to have that baby! Yes, I know M'Lynn missed her chance to take a whack at Ouiser! I don't know who these people are and I know this!

There is no escaping the influence of Steel Magnolias, whether it's the upcoming all-black-cast remake on Lifetime or Magnolias playwright Robert Harling's new TV series GCB (aka Good Christian Bitches). Perhaps there is no choice but to cave to the inevitable and see NC Theatre's production, which opens Friday at 7:30 p.m. and continues every day but Monday through April 29, with additional matinee performances at 2 p.m. on weekend days. —Zack Smith
