Writer-director Theodore Melfi attempts to take a page out of the Wes Anderson playbook, casting Bill Murray as the lovable, cantankerous fella at the center of his new film, but the neophyte filmmaker stumbles in his feature-length debut. The story of an older ne'er-do-well adopting his new neighbor's (Melissa McCarthy) son as a sidekick for his wacky adventures is buoyed by Murray's performance. He adds heart and charisma to an underbaked script. The supporting cast is strong, especially McCarthy.
