St Paul & the Broken Bones, George Tisdale Band

When: Fri., Sept. 13, 9 p.m. 2013

Sly Stone wants to create an all-albino band. He could get St. Paul & the Broken Bones singer Paul Janeway, who appears to be the whitest person this side of Louie Anderson. Then he opens his mouth and out jump Otis Redding and James Brown, proving Stone's point that real soul comes from the inside. It's a rather extraordinary trick, reminiscent of Eli "Paperboy" Reed—pretty elite company for a band only a couple of years old. The Birmingham sextet's self-titled debut EP goes from the slinky soul-psych of "The Glow" to the garage funk of "Champagne Halloween" to the show-stopping R&B ballad "Broken Bones and Pocket Change." —Chris Parker
