St. Lawrence String Quartet

When: Sat., Dec. 13, 8 p.m. 2014

It’s been more than two decades since the St. Lawrence String Quartet was a group of young (Canadian) Turks, playing exuberant concerts with genre-bending works by composers like Osvaldo Golijov. These days, the genres are all twisted, Golijov has mostly ceased writing and dozens of sharp young quartets embrace a similarly eclectic mission. But the St. Lawrence players have preserved their youthful energy while acquiring a middle-aged burnish. In Durham, their repertory is older fare, with Haydn’s “Joke” Quartet and Bartok’s Fourth, but there’s also a rare gem by Erich Korngold. —Will Robin
