Spring Awakening | Raleigh Little Theatre | Stage | Indy Week

Spring Awakening

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 27 2013

Though I've attended many a production at Raleigh Little Theatre with naughty words and implied acts of procreation and stuff, the natural conservatism one associates with the name "Little Theatre" makes it somewhat disconcerting to see they are producing a musical filled with sex, limited nudity and a spotlight number titled "Totally Fucked." Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's hit update of Frank Wedekind's oft-banned play about 19th-century German teenagers discovering those hormone-induced tingly feelings—and adults getting pissy about it—has become quite a sensation, with its depiction of adolescent desires and retro clothing set to contemporary defiant rock. Plus, it serves as an excellent metaphor for the sorry state of the modern sex education system, though today's teens at least have the Internet to turn to. It's still kind of odd to imagine this at Raleigh Little Theatre, where I recall going to many an all-ages production in my misspent youth. At least it will be less troubling than when I saw the Spring Awakening touring show a few years ago at Durham Performing Arts Center, where my balcony seat caused me to have a most unfortunate view directly over the naked rear end of Melchior during his sex scene with Wendla. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Friday's opener includes a post-show reception in the lobby. —Zack Smith
