Spring Awakening | UNC Campus: Historic Playmakers Theatre | Stage | Indy Week

Spring Awakening

When: March 24-26 2012

Did you miss the touring version of the Broadway hit Spring Awakening when it played DPAC? Here's a chance to see a campus version, and it may well have a more age-appropriate cast. Based on Frank Wedekind's tale of repressed, angst-y youth in late Wilhelmine Germany. The plot is rife with abortion, rape, gayness and suicide: It could be a Smiths or Nirvana or Bikini Kill record, but it's based on an 1892 play that was turned into a Tony-winning rock musical a few years back. The result is a curious amalgam of period costumes and repression, with modern tunes (music by Duncan Sheik, lyrics and book by Steven Sater). Company Carolina presents it beginning Saturday, March 24, two performances Sunday and concluding tonight at 7 p.m. Tickets to the general public are $10–$13. Visit unc.edu/company. —David Fellerath
