Looking for unique designer clothes and accessories that your nemesis across the street is certain not to be wearing at the big holiday party? Check out the Chic Market, where 30 local and national designers and boutiques will be showing their wares. It's at Exploris Museum, 201 E. Hargett St. in Raleigh, from 6:30-10 p.m.

The Raleigh Jaycees are sponsoring a wine and dessert tasting all day at Helios Coffee Co., 413 Glenwood Ave., in Raleigh. It's to benefit Goodfellows, a day of Christmas magic for children in need to be held Dec. 15. Tickets $15 at the door.

Can we resist plugging our own holiday extravaganza? Of course not. The Independent's Annual Holiday Bash is tonight at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, from 8 p.m. 'til. There'll be music by the Two Dollar Pistols, lots of food, and of course the traditional Celtic Rune Readings, temporary tattoos, body piercing, "prom" pictures and much more. Those with holiday shopping left to do--and those who simply like to nose about in artists' private domains--are gearing up for Chatham County's 10th annual Open Studio Tour on Saturday and Sunday, and again Dec. 14-15. The tour includes 52 artists, including metal sculptor Gretchen Lothrop, painter Morag Charlton and marble sculptor Jason Arkles (whose "Aging Dancer" is pictured here). An opening weekend reception is Friday from 7-9 p.m. in the gallery of the Central Carolina Community College's Pittsboro campus. Freezing rain or cool winter shine, today's a good day to see the countryside and some beautiful old houses at historic home tours in Wake Forest, Apex and Chapel Hill, all from 1-5 p.m. Wake Forest Historic Preservation Commission's tour of the town's historic homes costs $15, $12 in advance.
