Special farmers market hours for Thanksgiving meals



As you prepare for your Thanksgiving feast, consider shopping the farmers markets, which are brimming with fall vegetables and flowers, locally sourced meats, eggs and cheeses.

On Nov. 23, five area markets, including those in Carrboro (3–6 p.m.; 301 W. Main St.), Durham (2–5 p.m.; 501 Foster St.), Hillsborough (4–7 p.m., 144 E. Margaret Lane), Chapel Hill (3–6 p.m.; 201 S. Estes Drive) and Cary (3–6 p.m.; 1225 Morrisville Carpenter Road) will hold special market hours to provide fresh local foods for holiday meal preparation. Recipes also are available at trianglefarmersmarkets.wordpress.com. In addition, the N.C. 10 Percent Campaign is gathering a collection of recipes from local chefs that will be available in limited quantities at each holiday market.

Except for Carrboro, all of the markets participating in the Nov. 23 holiday market will be closed on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Also note that many markets have already changed their hours of operation for winter or will do so shortly. Check individual websites for details.

The Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) is looking to help young, aspiring farmers. The nonprofit will provide 40 scholarships to North Carolina and South Carolina's young farmers and ranchers to cover the cost of attending to its Sustainable Agriculture Conference scheduled for Dec. 3–5 in Winston-Salem. For the purpose of the scholarship, CFSA defines a young farmer or rancher as someone who has run a farm or ranch for less than 10 consecutive years or who significantly contributes to the daily maintenance of a farm. The Sustainable Ag Conference provides workshops on farm planning, marketing and common mistakes. The scholarship covers the main conference fee and funds for transportation and lodging.

Sarah Sinning, a CFSA intern, says the organization has received a great deal of interest regarding the scholarships, and she encourages interested farmers and ranchers to apply before the Nov. 12 scholarship deadline. Download an application at CFSA's website. For those planning ahead, Sinning also notes that CFSA has secured enough funds to offer the scholarship for three more years.

Make plans now for a Nov. 17 lecture titled "American Cookbooks: A Table-side Conversation About Food, Memory and Region" with Marcie Cohen Ferris, a professor in UNC's Department of American Studies, and Sara Foster of Foster's Market.

Flyleaf Books (752 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill, 942-7373) is hosting the event with UNC's Program in the Humanities and Human Values.

Tickets to the event are $30 and include coffee and tea during the conversation, with hors d'oeuvres and wine to follow. The event runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Click here to reserve a seat or call 962-1544.
