Southern Documentary Fund Archival Workshop

When: Wed., Nov. 20, 7 p.m. 2013

Southern novelists abound, but print isn't the only storytelling format that the American South is rich in. Durham is ground zero for documentary filmmaking and audio work, thanks to the annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the Center for Documentary Studies and the Southern Documentary Fund—a nonprofit that provides fiscal sponsorship, technical resources and mentoring to filmmakers located in and making work about the South. SDF hosts an informal benefit workshop run by Elisabeth Haviland James and John Biewen on using archival material in documentary film and audio. The workshop covers both formal and practical issues, including varieties of ways to use material and how to deal with licensing and public domain issues. James has produced, directed and/or edited award-winning films such as In So Many Words and The Loving Story through her company Thornapple Films. Biewen directs the audio program at the Center for Documentary Studies and produces work for National Public Radio, This American Life and other outlets. The SDF office is at 110 Morris St. in downtown Durham; RSVP required to —Chris Vitiello

Price: $20-25
