Soul Rebels

When: Fri., June 3, 9:30 p.m. 2011

It's all about the burping, bubbling sousaphone. Trumpets can screech and trombones can wail, but the deep, guttural blasts of a sousaphone transform Louisiana jazz-funk into a party. The Soul Rebels began their party parading down the streets of New Orleans, building on the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's funk by bringing a little hip-hop, too. The grooves can dig deep, at times making the septet sound like an all-brass iteration of The Roots. Lyrics—not the norm in New Orleans brass bands—wander from vamps to short raps to call-and-response sections, while songs respect and build on the tradition of parade music. Relocated briefly to Houston after Hurricane Katrina, the Soul Rebels have since returned to the Crescent City. Band members are ambassadors of their hometown, whether that means touring across the world or appearing on the first season finale of HBO's Treme. —Andrew Ritchey
