MARC ALAN SPERBER: SOLITUDE: IMAGES/SOUNDS

FRIDAY, JAN. 23, DURHAM

THE CARRACK MODERN ART—In an overcrowded world, we have to find new ways of being alone—hence the ubiquity of earbuds. In his new show at the Carrack, running Jan. 20-31, photographer Marc Alan Sperber frames images of solitude in crowded urban spaces, shooting in China, Tanzania, Amsterdam and New York City. You can visit the gallery in the slow daytime hours to experience some solitude yourself, but you should go to this reception to experience the images as Sperber did, as quiet interstices in teeming scenes. It features live ambient music by Dreamphonic (7 p.m.) and Soundscape Annex (8 p.m.), followed by the more raucous instrumentalism of White Cascade (9 p.m.) and Savage Knights (10 p.m.). There are a number of related events, including a Durham Cinematheque film program (Jan. 22, 7:30 p.m., $5), a "creative yoga" session (Jan. 21 and 28, 7:30 p.m., $5 suggested) and a Q&A with the artist (Jan. 31, 2 p.m., free). That's a lot of chances to be alone, together. 7 p.m., free, 111 W. Parrish St., Durham, 704-213-6666,
