Solitary Man

Rated R 90 min. 2010

Michael Douglas plays a car dealer in free fall in this so-so indie drama written by Brian Koppelman (Rounders, Ocean's Thirteen) and co-directed by same. After learning that he may have a heart condition, Douglas' Ben Kalmen's life gets worse when he's jailed for his shoddy business practices. Later, he destroys his family as he begins looking for relief from his feelings of mortality in the arms of very young women. Early on, the film is a repellent portrait of wealthy, jaded Upper East Siders, but Douglas brings charm and a hint of anarchy to his character's corroded soul. It's not quite enough to make the movie memorable, though. With Mary-Louise Parker, Imogen Poots, Jesse Eisenberg, Susan Sarandon, Jenna Fischer and Danny DeVito.
