When: Sun., Nov. 21, 3-6 p.m. 2010
Back in college, I had a severe addiction to daytime soap operas that I found more embarrassing than being addicted to, say, crystal meth or transvestite pornography. Bad writing and a graduate school workload eventually drove me away from the medium. And apparently most of the audience went with me: The last few years have seen Guiding Light go dark and Passions thwarted, and even As the World Turns recently stopped, well, turning. But my shameful past means I still recognize most of the CBS stars at the Soapstar Spectacular. There's Kim Zimmer from Guiding Light, whose Reva was cloned, traveled through time and suffered from amnesia where she thought she was Amish and an island princess! There's Jeannie Cooper, Mrs. Chancellor from The Young and the Restless, whose real-life plastic surgery aired on the show in the early 1980s! And Maura West, whose Carly on As the World Turns married Jack like 500 times!
Though several of the 10 actors at this event—which includes a live Q & A, audience scene-acting and "Soap Director 'Tricks'"—are now playing different roles (Zimmer is now apparently Echo DiSavoy on One Life to Live), there's some powerful nostalgia for longtime fans. But I'll probably stay at home ... wait, they have Michael Muhney from Y&R?! Dude, he was Sheriff Lamb on Veronica Mars! That guy is awesome! Tickets start at $36 for the event, which runs 3–6 p.m.; you can shell out $146 for a preshot VIP package where you get into a meet-and-greet with the stars from noon to 2 p.m. —Zack Smith
