Caught in the hinterlands between gritty drama and goofy action picture, Snitch
stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a desperate father who agrees to infiltrate a drug cartel when his teen son, popped for possession of Ecstasy, is sentenced to 20 years in prison. Snitch
wants so badly to be taken seriously, and it earns that right in several scenes which confront the madness of mandatory sentencing for first-time offenders. But Johnson can't hold the center as the determined dad. His chiseled physique and trademark stoicism work directly against the grain of the role. Put a good everyman actor in this part—Richard Jenkins, say—and this movie goes another direction entirely.
