SMEDES YORK

SATURDAY, NOV. 15, PITTSBORO

MCINTYRE'S BOOKS—Notice the telling preposition in the title of Smedes York's self-published memoir: It's Growing Up With Raleigh, not "in." Yes, York has lived a notable life in the capital city, as an N.C. State basketball player, a two-term mayor (197983) and the torchbearer of the property development dynasty behind Raleigh landmarks from the N.C. State Bell Tower to the Cameron Village shopping center. But his reflections, in conversation with John Sharpe, are as much about a city's journey from segregated Southern backwater to urban business center as they are about York growing into the big shoes of his father, a developer and Board of Education member who made the motion to integrate Raleigh schools. On an intimate local stage, it's a broadly applicable story of the Civil Rights Movement and community leadership, urban growth and change, fathers and sons. 11 a.m., free, 220 Market St., 919-542-3030, www.fearrington.com/village-shops/mcintyres-books. —Brian Howe
